Dans Irish Independent du 27 octobre 1958, p.9, on lit une version qui corrobore Associated Press mais dans un style tout différent :
« Des millions de personnes ont entendu l’annonce de l’élection à la radio
...« La fumée est blanche », a annoncé le commentateur de Radio Vatican à 18h02. « Il n’y a absolument aucun doute. Un Pape a été élu. » Des cris de joie ont éclaté parmi la foule, et la nouvelle a été diffusée dans le monde entier par radio et par téléphone. Quelques instants plus tard, Radio Vatican a déclaré : « Dans quelques instants, nous connaîtrons le nom du nouveau Pape. » Mais vers 18h05, le premier doute s’est installé. La fumée devint momentanément noire, puis redevint blanche, et le commentateur, informé que les personnes présentes sur la place commençaient à craindre qu’elle soit vraiment noire, exprima sa conviction qu’elle était bien blanche. La foule attendait de voir si le cardinal Canali, cardinal diacre le plus ancien, allait apparaître au balcon central de la basilique pour faire l’annonce officielle « Habemus Papam » (Nous avons un Pape). Au bout d’une demi-heure, comme personne n’apparaissait, un haut responsable du Vatican déclara : « Nous pouvons désormais affirmer avec certitude que le vote a été négatif. » À 6h25, les projecteurs qui éclairaient la cheminée furent éteints. Le présentateur déclara que c’était là un signe supplémentaire que le résultat était négatif, puis suspendit ses commentaires pendant quelques minutes tandis que la radio diffusait de la musique. À 6h32, un commentateur est revenu à l’antenne pour annoncer que la radio mettait fin à son émission spéciale « en raison du résultat négatif ». »

A Pope has been elected.’ Shouts of joy erupted among the crowd, and the news was broadcast around the world by radio and telephone. Moments later, Vatican Radio stated: ‘In a few moments, we shall know the name of the new Pope. ” But around 6.05 pm, the first doubts began to arise. The smoke turned black for a moment, then turned white again, and the commentator, informed that those present in the square were beginning to fear that it was truly black, expressed his conviction that it was indeed white. The crowd waited to see if Cardinal Canali, the senior cardinal deacon, would appear on the central balcony of the basilica to make the official announcement ‘Habemus Papam’ (We have a Pope). After half an hour, as no one appeared, a senior Vatican official stated: ‘We can now say with certainty that the vote was negative. ’ At 6.25 am, the spotlights illuminating the chimney were switched off. The presenter stated that this was a further indication that the result was negative, then paused his commentary for a few minutes whilst the radio played music. At 6.32 am, a commentator returned to the airwaves to announce that the radio station was ending its special broadcast ‘due to the negative result ’.”
