L’intrus comprit ! Lisons la suite.] Le pape retourna immédiatement à son bureau. Il resta debout à me regarder.

To clarify what I said earlier, I shall once again quote the inimitable Benny Lai from his book *The Unelected Pope*!
RépondreSupprimer‘Cardinal Siri’s interview with the author (21 May 1985). Siri did not specify the subject of the conversation with the Pope [this is worth bearing in mind, as a certain Capovilla would come up with an unverifiable explanation to sidestep the mystery in … 1991, by which time all those involved had passed away! And so, it was easy to concoct a ridiculous scenario that everyone would, of course, believe!!!], claiming to remember the event, but not its content [strange], which he had deliberately erased from his memory [so he did remember the content, but, not wanting to say anything, he claimed to have deliberately erased it from his memory; this adjective is crucial as it proves everything. And besides, how did Benny Lai know this detail if not from Siri himself, whom he summarises without quoting, and for good reason!].
...
... “John XXIII,” explains the cardinal, “had given me permission to disturb him even at night [unheard of!!!]. So, when Tardini told me he had failed to persuade the Pope and I offered to do so, he insisted that I act immediately. He phoned John XXIII and had me go up to the flat via the private staircase. I began: ‘Your Holiness, if you’ll allow me, I’m going to raise a matter that falls outside my remit, but I’m speaking out because I love the Pope [!!!].’ ’ ‘I know that,’ John XXIII interrupted me [!!!]. I continued: ‘Now, you must let me speak,’ and I set out the matter, concluding: ‘Listen, Your Holiness, we are heading for a great deal of trouble here. If you wish, I shall list them for you.’ The Pope stood up and began pacing up and down the length of the library, whilst I followed him a step behind without saying a word, waiting to see how the matter would be resolved. [The matter must have been serious, since it was not within the cardinal’s remit – yet he dared to speak in such a commanding manner as if he were the Pope himself! And indeed, he had been the Pope before his defection, and the intruder was a nobody, and both of them knew it full well.] At a certain point, I played my trump card. [Here we go!] When John XXIII came to the window, I spoke up: ‘Your Holiness, do you see that over there?’ And the Pope replied: ‘What is it? Is that St Peter’s Square?’ ‘Do you see the white strip that marks the boundary of the Vatican City State? If the matter is settled as Your Holiness wishes, that strip will disappear. If that strip disappears, the Council will no longer take place. ” [The episode therefore took place between 1959 and 1962. But what was this trump card that struck the intruder at his weak point? Quite simply, if John XXIII stood by his resolution, Siri would speak out and the whole house of cards erected at the 1958 conclave would come crashing down! The Freemasons and the Communists would certainly have reacted by crossing the Vatican border, and Siri and John XXIII would certainly have risked their lives, but at the same time Vatican II would have been wiped out: it was a nuclear explosion, figuratively speaking, of course. The intruder understood! Let us read on.] The Pope returned immediately to his office. He stood there looking at me. Then he said: ‘That Genoese fellow has won.’ [Siri was therefore fully intending to use his leverage, and he knew it would work – and indeed, it did, because the intruder was afraid that Siri might speak out! But would he have spoken out if John XXIII hadn’t given in? That’s another story. The cardinal was playing his last card, and John XXIII believed him, hence his remark, ‘That Genoese man has won!’ Was it a provocation on Siri’s part? Possible, if not probable, but we shall never know.] I rang Tardini and informed him that everything had been settled. Tardini was astonished and asked me how I’d done it. ‘Truth be told, it’s a family secret’ [in other words, the secret of what had happened at the conclave, in which Tardini had not taken part, as he was not yet a cardinal], I replied, but as he persisted, I told him that I had exploited the Pope’s weaknesses [that is the key phrase: the weaknesses of the intruder! And what were these weak points? All the intrigues of the 1958 conclave, which John XXIII certainly did not want to see revealed]. He, too, let slip, ‘That Genoese.’”

» «Lo so», mi interruppe Giovanni XXIII [!!!]. Rimase in piedi a guardarmi.
